Architects renew call for education campaign on basketball hoops
Australian architects have renewed their call for a public education campaign on thedangers of home basketball hoops after the death of a nine-year-old boy.
The call follow's the Victorian Building Commission's decision this week to recommendimmediate removal of unsafe hoops.
The commission's released building guidelines for home hoops after a Melbourne boydied last year when he attempted a slam dunk, collapsing a wall that held a hoop.
It's the third death linked to slam dunking in Victoria since 1996.
The Royal Australian Institute of Architects' building advisory service Archicentresays people must be taught that not all walls are safe for basketball hoops.
Spokesman ROBERT CAULFIELD's worried there could be thousands of unsafe hoops in homesacross Australia.
The building commission's warned all hoops on single-skin brick walls, especially thoseover garage doors, should be removed.
